McDonald’s is switching gears after its AI-powered ordering system failed to meet expectations. The discontinued system, intended to streamline operations, experienced challenges with order accuracy and customer satisfaction, sometimes resulting in viral mishaps (e.g., bacon-topped ice cream). Nonetheless, the company remains optimistic about voice-ordering AI solutions and intends to explore other AI implementations.
Business Takeaway: While mostly amusing, the McDonald’s example highlights the perils of early AI adoption. It’s not hard to imagine how poor implementation could have far more dire consequences, especially in other industries (e.g., Zillow, Amazon). Moreover, AI implementation has renewed debate about replacing human jobs, just as automation and other technological advances have before it. SHRM President Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. warns:
“In the next 10 years, more than 1 billion jobs will be transformed by technology, with a McKinsey & Co. report finding that as much as 30% of the workforce could be jobless in seven years because of AI. And only 12% of HR professionals think their organization is using the technology effectively.”
