Paid Parental Leave a Hot Topic Again

Effective July 1, 2024, the University of Wisconsin system will offer eligible employees up to six weeks of paid parental leave. While this is increasingly common throughout the country, particularly at universities, this may be the largest implementation of such a benefit in Wisconsin. At the federal level, President Biden included plans for implementing a national paid family leave law in his March 2024 budget, providing up to 12 weeks of paid leave to eligible employees.

Business Takeaway: This was one of the hottest pre-COVID topics and, accordingly, it is unsurprising to see it return to prominence. While there have been some regional implementations, businesses in jurisdictions in which it is not (yet) required are now contemplating it too. Would a paid parental leave policy help you retain your best performers and attract new ones?
