There seem to be several international efforts afoot to improve work conditions for gig workers including Japan’s Freelance Act (effective November 1, 2024) and the EU Platform Work Directive (effective December 1, 2024, to be implemented by late 2026). Discussions around these and other global initiatives relate to everything from employment misclassification and extending worker protections to creating rules around AI and automatic algorithm use.
