Better Workplace Conflict

Conflict resolution facilitator Priya Parker argues in her forthcoming book, The Art of Fighting, that the problem in many organizations is not too much conflict, but too little productive conflict. In Parker’s view, many teams drift between “unhealthy peace” (e.g., avoidance, politeness, and pretending everything is fine) and unhealthy conflict (e.g., escalation or domination). One of the most common workplace issues she sees is “toxic politeness,” where teams are too careful to have the conversations they actually need about products, customers, strategy, or performance. Her prescription is not more fighting for its own sake, but more skill, structure, and comfort with what she calls “healthy heat.” A recent Predictive Index survey seems to support her thesis, showing that delivering constructive criticism is the top blind spot for managers.
