BadgerCare Work Requirements Are Coming

Beginning in 2027, certain adults enrolled in Wisconsin’s BadgerCare Plus program will need to satisfy new work-related requirements to obtain or renew coverage. The rules generally apply to childless adults under age 65 and require qualifying work, volunteering, participation in a work program, school enrollment; some combination of those activities; or monthly income of at least $580. New applicants will face the requirements beginning January 1, 2027, while current enrollees will see them applied at renewal starting in March 2027.

What does that mean for business owners? You may see an uptick in employees (particularly lower-wage, seasonal, part-time, or irregular schedule workers) requesting records showing work hours, income, school enrollment, or other qualifying activity. Now is a good time to make sure payroll and HR teams know how to respond, and without turning benefits questions into employment law problems.
